In between which, we had noticed her dancing with a few other members of her Maple and Ash team, (not one to pass any judgment to anyone's dance moves) but she was literally grinding up against another female server and male staff member and was not paying attention to us or the other guests that had yet to leave the restaurant.
30 minutes later and us asking for the check multiple times, I decided to approach her. After the third round of shots for those who were drinking, another member of our party who is also pregnant - asked for the check again. We ended up ordering a few rounds of shots, as some of us who weren't drinking, wanted to wrap up the night as by this time it had reached 11:30pm. Following our first request for the check, she made us aware that we hadn't reached our minimum spend (even though between 12 of us we all had appetizers, steak and desert) and that we had to spend more money but wouldn't tell us specifically how much more.
It was only until the very end however, that everything had become a lot clearer to why the service was so poor. As the night progressed - and after receiving our food which was thankfully second to none, we had noticed our server seemed to be getting less and less attentive to us as the night went on. Despite assuring us that we will have one of their private rooms since it's a "private dinner with a large minimum spend" The night started off on a sour note when our server made a snide comment to the busboy in reference to one of our friends (who is pregnant) mistakenly knocking over her glass of water, as she was being sat at the booth. At first we were slightly shocked to hear that we had to put down a $1200 deposit and sign a contract to ensure that a minimum spend of $2400 was reached to but even so, we were happy to oblige as we understand that the restaurant doesn't want to be at a loss if a party of that size is a no show - bearing in mind though, they had put us on a normal table within the bar area not even on the dining room side of the restaurant. My friend chose to book Maple and Ash last Thurs evening to host 12 of us for her birthday celebrations. I Have been to Maple and Ash twice before - and we're all regulars at the likes of RPM Steak, Gibsons, Joe's, Mastros etc. Great for couples."I've honestly never felt the need nor the inclination to warn a big group/large party of people away from a restaurant like I do now with Maple and Ash - hence my review so that hopefully the frustrations we had encountered will not ruin anyone else's group celebrations. Once we were finally served a drink the waiter was attentive. Word to the wise, the pairing is a lot of alcohol. Hats off to M&A for correcting the problem. I wish I remembered his name because he was very understanding. There was no squabbling, he changed the bill for us. We explained how we thought it was $200 a person. We spoke to a manager who sat down at our table. We assumed that the extra $55 included the pairing. Sides of smoked asparagus, potatoes au gratin, and some type of ravioli. Smoked clams, oysters, crab legs, and prawns. Lamb chops and steak were cooked to perfection. Chop salad was made with a single onion ring and chunks of bacon. She had been in contact with someone at M&A to plan this night. She spoke to our waiter and they gave it to us at the end of the meal with a generic message and not the special one she had prepared. When we were seated and presented menus, my wife was very disappointed that the menu had no message.
